A new era of eco-friendly luxury cannabis packaging?

As the recreational cannabis industry thrives in California due to the legalization of Proposition 64, we cannot stop to wonder, what will be next in the world of Cannabis? we have begun to see innovative materials and concepts. Companies are turning “green”in regard to being biodegradable, reusable, and with recycled materials. Big packaging companies such as Contempo Card are starting to produce cannabis packaging and we may begin to see the bar set higher in a new era of high end eco-friendly luxury packaging.

Luxury and eco-friendly usually don’t mix. Luxury derives from the Latin word “luxus”, conjures up images of pomp, excess and indulgence (1).  Luxury brands often use elaborate excessive packaging that must be thrown away when the product is unwrapped. With luxury brands, many customers keep and store their original boxes for display or future resale purposes. Luxury items can always be resold and having the original box retains much of its value.

In 2010, a handful of companies helped make eco-friendly packaging a trend. Gucci traded in their packaging for a 100% recyclable, FSC certified paper, and cut down on excess packaging altogether (2). This set the bar higher for luxury companies to start thinking more about the environment and the damage it is causing to having the packaging sit in a landfill and take nearly 1,000 years to decompose. Last year in 2017, companies such as Lush and Dior have made the conscious switch to a more sustainable packaging.

Now that many packaging companies are starting to produce cannabis packaging, it is important to keep in mind that although we may be seeing luxury packaging, that being eco-friendly and sustainable and good for the environment is essential for our planet.
